Know the difference between parent coaching and a PTDE course
In Texas, Parent Taught Driver Education (PTDE) is a specific education pathway with its own process. Helping a learner practice and enrolling in that pathway are different decisions. Before purchasing training, use TDLR’s official guidance to understand instructor eligibility, course selection and required documentation. LearnerMiles is a supplemental software tool, not a TDLR-approved PTDE course.
Official guidance comes first
Before you practice in Texas
TDLR explains that parents using PTDE must follow the program process and take responsibility for the required instruction. Check eligibility and the current guide before beginning that pathway. Keep the documents required by your course and licensing agency separately from your personal skill notes.

This is a starting point, not a complete licensing checklist. Use current official requirements for your age and circumstances.
Three ways to make practice more useful
Confirm your education pathway
Ask whether you are following an approved parent-taught course or another approved driver-education program. Keep its instructions and required records available before planning extra practice.
Give each practice session one purpose
Use the workbook to choose a skill such as gentle stops, lane position or observation at intersections. Pick a lawful setting suited to the learner rather than turning a busy commute into an unplanned first lesson.
Keep useful notes alongside required paperwork
After parking, record the skill practiced, assistance needed, conditions and one next goal. Follow your provider’s rules for counting and documenting required instruction; do not assume every workbook session qualifies.
A practice example to discuss with your coach
A parent notices that a learner brakes late when approaching a stop. Before the next session, review how to look farther ahead and agree on a calm verbal cue. Repeat the skill in an appropriate low-demand setting, then record whether the learner began slowing earlier without prompting. Ask a qualified instructor for help if control remains inconsistent.
Keep the device away while driving. Review the record together once safely parked.
Questions from Texas families
Is LearnerMiles a Texas-approved Parent Taught Driver Education provider?
No. LearnerMiles provides supplemental practice planning and progress tools. Choose any required approved course through official Texas resources. Purchasing our workbook does not enroll you in PTDE or issue a Texas driver-education certificate.
Can adults use these tools too?
Yes. Adult beginners can use the same practice planning and progress tools. Check adult permit, supervision and training requirements separately; teen requirements may not apply.
Do we need to travel to Maryland?
No. LearnerMiles is available online to families in Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and communities throughout Texas. These are places where customers can use the software, not LearnerMiles branch offices or a promise of local in-car instruction.
